After having my little girl Isabella, I decided that I did not want to go back to work full-time and I started searching for something more fulfilling which I could fit in around my family.
Ideally I wanted something fun and creative, which would also be profitable and flexible, so that I could spend more time with my little girl.
After much searching, I discovered The Keepsake Consultancy and immediately realized the benefits in joining. They offer a fantastic opportunity for women that want to start out in business, which is both affordable and flexible.
Initially I started with just one course and began by specialising in Fingerprint Jewellery. I enjoyed it so much – I couldn’t wait to get involved in making all the other wonderful products.
I really liked the idea that you could just start with one course and then add to this when you could afford it. I’m now fully trained in all 5 areas of production. Even after doing all of the courses - it’s such a low investment that it’s easy to see a quick return.
The only other major cost was the purchase of my Kiln and Starter Kits. I wanted to be able to offer the full range of products, including; Clay Impressions, Pottery Prints and Silver Fingerprint Jewellery, so this was a necessity.
How often do you work? It can vary each week. The majority of the time it tends to be a couple of hours per day. I have a little girl therefore I needed a job that was flexible enough to fit around her. This works perfectly! I can do as little or as much as I want!
Do you put in any extra time? I am so passionate about succeeding with my business I do tend to put in extra time. I find it easy to do so, as I am a very creative person and love what I’m doing. It doesn't seem like work at all!
Idea of realistic earnings? In my first 6 months I took about £6000 working part-time - just a few hours per day. At that point I was only trained in making Fingerprint Jewellery – so I was still really learning! Now that I am established and have completed all of the courses – I am hoping to at least double this over the next 6 months.
How do you view Training & Support? The training and support I have received has been excellent, especially since the launch of the on-line support desk. Your queries are always answered within 24 hours. The training courses are packed with information and techniques and are really hands on. I came away from each course feeling really excited and couldn't wait to put my new skills into practice!
What are your ongoing costs? Materials, advertising and marketing, this can range from a one off advert in a magazine to a monthly cost i.e. I have an Advertising Board in a Soft Play Centre which has proved extremely effective!
Where do you work and do you need a car? I have a studio at home. I would say a car is definitely vital as you need transport to take samples to fairs and for getting to customers houses for Party bookings.
Do you advertise? I have an ongoing advert on a large board in a Soft Play Centre. I also advertise in libraries, shops and magazines.
Do you need space for stock? I keep my stock in my studio and garage.
Are there any downsides to the job? Because of the support I have received - I don't feel as though there are any downsides at present. I love what I am doing!
Would you recommend this Opportunity to other Mums? Definitely! This is a fantastic opportunity for women who want to start their own business. It's affordable and what's more you can work at your own pace to fit around your family life!!
