History of the Journal The Journal started life as the ‘mumsclub advertiser’; a simple way for forum members to have a well priced advert in a publication that everyone could distribute. Even before the first draft had been compiled, articles had been written for inclusion, and it suddenly became more than a simple advertiser, in walked Jane’s mum Pat who saw it as “more like a journal”, and The Business Mum’s Journal was born!
The first edition was distributed through our forum members who sent copies out with online orders, had them at their own baby shows and craft fairs, soft play areas and the NEC’s Baby show. It was a scary decision to make, but us mums work well under pressure so we went for it. There was really nothing to be scared of; members of our forum gave up their time to come along and help out for a day over the weekend so not only did we get 5,000 copies out into circulation, we also had a great time and managed to inspire a few more mums into business along the way.
The next year it was time to take the Journal up a gear. We increased the number of copies and started considering further distribution outlets. So in Spring of 2009, the 2nd edition was distributed across the Midlands through a selection of Mothercare stores, as well as the previous distribution methods that had worked so well before. We launched in April at an event at the Corporation Street store and were seen in the local press. during the week after (see press release here).
